SEO for a small business: where to start

A practical sequence for a small business with no SEO budget — what pays off soonest, what can wait, and what not to do.

Most SEO advice is written for companies with a team and a budget. If you are a small business where the same person handles sales and updates the website, most of it is unusable. This article is about sequence: what to do first so the effect arrives soonest.

1. Google Business Profile — the fastest win

If you serve customers in a place or an area, this is the single most important thing and it is free. The profile appears in the map and in the side panel, frequently above the organic results. For queries like "dentist near me" it is decisive.

  • Fill in every field — category, opening hours, services, service area.
  • Upload real photos, not stock. Profiles with photos get considerably more interaction.
  • Ask satisfied customers for reviews and reply to all of them — the bad ones included.
  • Make sure name, address and phone are written identically everywhere online.

2. Check whether your site is indexed at all

It sounds obvious, but we regularly find sites invisible to Google for technical reasons — blocked in robots.txt since development, left with a noindex after launch, or pointing at the wrong canonical. Register in Google Search Console; it is free and it will tell you directly which pages are indexed and which are not.

3. One page per service

The most common structural mistake on small sites is a single "Services" page listing everything. It cannot rank well for any specific query, because it is not about anything specific.

If you offer five things, make five pages. Each answers the questions someone searching for exactly that arrives with: what it includes, who it suits, how it runs, what determines the price. That is SEO work and sales work at once — the same page does both.

4. Write to the questions, not to keywords

The most accessible source of topics is the questions customers ask you on the phone every day. If the same question comes ten times a month, people are typing it into Google too. Written once as a page, the answer works for search and for sales alike — you send the link instead of explaining again.

5. Speed on a phone

Test your site in PageSpeed Insights on the mobile view, not desktop. A large share of Bulgarian traffic arrives on a phone, often over mobile data. The most common causes of slow loading are oversized unoptimised images and unnecessary scripts — both fixable without rebuilding the site.

What not to do

  • Do not buy links. "1,000 backlinks" packages do nothing at best, and at worst earn a penalty that takes a long time to recover from.
  • Do not stuff copy with keywords. Search engines have long assessed meaning, and a human spots it immediately, costing you credibility.
  • Do not make a separate page per town if the content is identical with the name swapped. That is duplicate content and it does not work.
  • Do not believe a guarantee of first place. Ranking depends on an algorithm no supplier controls.

Realistic expectations

A Google Business Profile can show results within weeks. So can technical fixes, because they remove a specific obstacle. Ranking for competitive commercial queries takes months and depends on how strong the competition in your sector is. If you need enquiries this month, paid advertising is the more honest answer.
